MoH re-employs lay counsellors

The Ministry of Health (MoH) is reportedly re-employing the lay counsellors it sacked after defying a court order that sought their return to work during last year's public sector strike.

Goretetse Kekgonegile, publicity secretary of the Botswana Federation of Public Sector Unions (BOFEPUSU), said they are aware that the employer is calling the counsellors one by one and giving them their jobs back. He said that they hoped that all the 27 lay counsellors who had lost their jobs would be re employed.

Kekgonegile believes that the re-employment resulted from the pressure they have been piling on the ministry."BOFEPUSU, the Water Utilities Corporation and union representatives of the Botswana Land Boards and Local Authorities Workers Union (BOLLAWU) have been meeting with the ministry to talk about these issues," he told Mmegi. Kekgonegile added that they are still pushing for the re-employment of about 360 cleaners and drivers as well as two nurses.
