MoE struggles to pay student allowances

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has said that it is looking at ways of complying with a court order to pay University of Botswana (UB) students' allowances during vacation.

Deputy permanent secretary in the ministry, Golekanye Setume said that the June and July allowances for UB students were not included in their budget for this year. "We are going to be affected negatively in the budget if the allowances are paid. We will have to comply with the court order," he said. Setume explained that paying UB students' allowances for the past two months will cost about P20 million.

The ministry stopped the allowances two months ago but Justice Key Dingake of the High Court has ruled that they must be paid. Last month, the ministry lost a similar case filed by Limkokwing University students.
