MoE appeals court order to pay students

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has appealed a court order to pay University of Botswana student allowances it had withheld for June and July.

According to MoE's deputy permanent secretary, Golekanye Setume, the ministry felt aggrieved by the decision. He said tersely: "We will withhold paying the students pending the decision on the application lodged last week at the Court of Appeal."

The High Court declared MoE's decision not to pay the students for the long vacation months of June and July 2009 null and void. Justice Key Dingake ordered that the students be paid their June and July allowances on or before July 30, 2009.
