Mo ibrahim exposes botswana's poor human rights record

It feels good reading the summary of Mo Ibrahim's latest report that puts Botswana No. 2 in governance in the whole of Africa and the best in mainland Africa yet again.

However the latest Mo Ibrahim report also lays bare the serious shortfalls of Botswana's human rights record, as they rank Botswana No 12 in Africa and award it a paltry 58% for its human rights track record.

In the rights index, Botswana is also beaten by Lesotho (61.7%), Zambia (64.4%), Benin (68.4%), Namibia (71.3), South Africa (68%), among others. Covered under this index are workers rights, where Botswana has not helped itself with its unending court battles and policy decisions against workers unions.  Besides workers' rights the rights index also considers  human rights in a country.
