Ministry pilots specialisation at primary schools

The Ministry of Education has started piloting subject specialisation in primary schools in a bid to reduce teachers' workload. Currently, teachers handle all subjects. The ministry spokesperson, Nomsah Zuze said the pilot project has started in 78 schools.

"We looked at primary schools that have been performing well and those which have been performing poorly for the past three years to balance them," she said. She added that teachers have been given subjects according to their strengths.

"The current teachers in schools are used in the pilot. You will find that one teacher used to teach all the subjects but now allocation of subjects is based on their specialisation and on competency and strength," she stated. Subjects which have been identified for specialisation are Mathematics, English, Setswana, Social Studies and Science. The pilot project will focus on Standard Four, Five and Six and continuity will be maintained to Standard Seven in subsequent years, Zuze explained.
