The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security, Segakweng Tsiane has declined to publicly share details of Botswana’s hangman and his post at the Parliamentary Accounts Committee (PAC).

Tsiane who was at pains to respond to the controversial question, later said that she preferred to provide the answer privately to the PAC member who asked the question, Member of Parliament for Nata-Gweta constituency, Polson Majaga. Majaga wanted the PS to unravel the mystery that is the hangman, his or her duties and the secrecy behind the issue, further asking to be briefed on why the post is never advertised to attract aspiring hangmen across the country.

Tsiane in response pleaded with the PAC to answer the question separately to Majaga who was asking the question, a suggestion to which the PAC did not object to. The Penal Code specifies that a person who is sentenced to death will be hanged by the neck while for military executions, the Botswana Defence Force Act allows the President to determine any manner of execution.
