Minister knows nothing about Basarwa Plight

Local Government Minister Peter Siele says he knows absolutely nothing about the on-going forced relocation of Basarwa and Bakgalagadi at Ranyane settlement in Gantsi District. Speaking in an interview on Friday, Siele told The Monitor that he has not been informed about the matter.

He says he has only reads about it in the newspapers.  “I also heard about it from MP Christiaan De Graaf (the Gantsi Member of Parliament) recently, but no one has (officially) briefed me, or consulted me about it, so  for now, I can’t comment about it”, Miniser Siele said. Recently Gantsi District Council Secretary, Kegaisamang Molepolole admitted in an interview with our sister publication, Mmegi that they disconnected a borehole, which had been watering the settlement populated by Basarwa and Bakgalagadi for 17 years. The borehole was disconnected in December last year, forcing the residents to flee to farms where they work for peanuts. The local authority revealed that the object was specifically to close down the settlement of Ranyane and force the residents out so that they do not disturb wildlife breeding.

He said a decision was taken long ago following a comprehensive study of the national settlement policy in the whole of Gantsi, which found that Ranyane sat on a wildlife corridor.
