In a strange twist of events Assistant Minister of Agriculture Olifant Mfa has slammed a programme run by his ministry. At a Kgotla meeting in Mochudi on Friday, Mfa launched a frontal attack on the government drought relief programme and dismissed it as a waste of time and resources.

He said that people take drought relief as a form of employment and they end up living their farms to work under the programme. "It is very sad to see our people abandoning agriculture which for a very long time has been the mainstay of the economy even before independence," said Mfa.

He added that if he had the powers, he would abolish the programme and use the millions allocated to it to improve agriculture. The Assistant Minister was consulting on the agricultural programmes more especially ALDEP III which the residents rejected saying some of its restrictions made it difficult to be accessible to many Batswana and called for a review.
