Medics Explain Importance Of Lumbar Puncture

FRANCISTOWN: Doctors at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital are complaining that Batswana are resistant to lumbar puncture.

Hospital Superintendent, Dr Japhter Masunge, said that patients with meningitis who come to the hospital end up dying because relatives will not give consent for their patients to have lumbar puncture so they can retrieve the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) for tests.

Masunge said that Batswana have a belief that the lumbar puncture kills because of lack of understanding about why it has to be performed on some patients.
