Medical schemes regulated by NIBFIRA - Matlhabaphiri

The Assistant Minister of Health Gaotlhaetsi Matlhabaphiri told Parliament on Monday that the regulation of medical aid schemes does not fall within his portfolio of responsibilities as the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NIBFIRA) is legally empowered to regulate medical aid schemes.

Answering a question from Tonota North Member of Parliament (MP) Fidelis Molao, Matlhabaphiri said the current impasse between the medical aid societies and medical practitioners has grabbed the attention of his office because patients, who are the beneficiaries, are involved. Molao had asked the minister to make an official statement on the current impasse and as to whether beneficiaries would get quality health care. The Tonota North legislator had also wanted to know the protective measures the ministry had in place in the event that some patients get physical or emotional hurt during the process. Matlhabaphiri then admitted that his ministry was aware of the current saga following a recently held Sectoral High Level Consultative Committee (HLCC) where the two warring parties met and discussed various thorny issues.

He said that BOCCIM reported at the HLCC meeting that they were mediating between the Health Funders Association and Medical Practitioners Group. "It was agreed that BOCCIM should continue with this responsibility and prepare a position paper on the outcome of this discussion at the next meeting.
