Masisi blames alcohol for increased HIV/AIDS infections

FRANCISTOWN: The Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Mokgweetsi Masisi has blamed alcohol consumption for HIV/AIDS increase among the youth. Masisi said this when giving a keynote address at the Centre for Youth of Hope (CEYOHO)'s first National Youth Conference held here on Tuesday.

The occasion was held under the theme, 'Sustaining the Momentum of Positive Prevention.' "I know that these groups of young people we are discussing about are the very ones who indulge in alcohol, take drugs and engage in early sexual relationships, but alcohol is not good and it can change your life if used excessively," said Masisi.

Masisi then encouraged youth to dread alcohol as some elderly people take advantage of alcohol in order to abuse the youth.  He said if investigations could be made, people could see that most of the HIV is transferred when people have sex while drunk. Masisi said that this is because when people are drunk, they end up taking irresponsible decisions that may lead them to having unprotected sex or even not using condoms properly, hence the transfer of the virus.
