Masisi appointed BDP Whip

After his appointment as government Chief Whip, Francistown West legislator, Tshelang Masisi has said he will ensure that ruling party legislators contribute meaningfully to debates in Parliament.

He said that in his new role, he will make Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) MPs toe the line after a party caucus decision. "If it is a constitutional matter, I must discuss it with them and caucus to ensure government bills pass smoothly," he said. He stated that disciplinary action will be taken against BDP members who disobey caucus decisions. He said the factions that exist in the party are not bad because they strengthen democracy. He explained that naturally when the opposition is weak like now, then there will be a pseudo-opposition bloc in the BDP. "But being in factions does not mean people hate each other. It is just that they agree to challenge each other whenever the need arises. I don't have a problem with it. It would actually test my capability as a whip. I don't want to lead people who will just be saying 'yes sir' to everything I say, without challenging me. That would be boring," he said.

Masisi has started his new role by helping first time MPs to settle in Parliament. He said that the new MPs are still watching like hawks, studying the new terrain that is Parliament so that they can see where to jump in.
