Man drags pawn shop owner to High Court

LOBATSE: A Zimbabwean man has dragged the owner of the popular Baba Pawnshop in Tlokweng to the High Court for damaging his truck.

Takavarasha Mharara is demanding compensation of over P50, 000 for the truck he pawned last year when he was desperately looking for P30,000. Justice Abednico Tafa is presiding over the case.  The owner of the pawn shop, Ilan Zilberman, told the court that after inspecting the truck, which had minor mechanical problems, he agreed to lend Takavarasha P25,000 in July last year. He said that they agreed that the truck should be parked outside his compound, as the gate was too small to allow it in. Zilberman said that later, Mharara came to pay the P39,000 and to collect his truck. He said that Mharara reported to him that a computer box was missing and demanded P21,000 compensation on the spot. He said that they could not reach an agreement because Mharara and two of his men got into the truck without his permission.

In cross examination, Mharara, who is representing himself, said that upon paying P39, 000 he realised that something was amiss in the truck after he saw wires hanging loose.
