Man dies in car mishap

SELEBI-PHIKWE: A 32-year old man died in a car accident over the weekend along the Serule-Selebi-Phikwe road. Traffic officer at Selebi-Phikwe Police Station, Assistant Superintendent, Alison Mbaiwa, told Mmegi at the scene of the accident that the deceased was driving to Bobonong.

The accident happened on a badly damaged section of the road that is under repair by China State Construction and Engineering Company/Excavator Hire Joint Venture, who are building the Dikgathong Dam pipeline. Mbaiwa said they suspect the deceased was speeding and did not see the sign posts warning drivers about the state of the road. He said the vehicle hit the signs and rammed into a mound of soil before overturning and killing the driver on the spot. He suspects the driver was not wearing a seat belt because he was thrown out of the vehicle. "The accident happened around 4am. The deceased was driving an Amarok white bakkie. We found till slips that proved that he had bought food in Gaborone at midnight," said Mbaiwa.

Meanwhile 92 students escaped death by a whisker when a bus they were travelling in overturned at the same spot. A Khanda Express bus, which was ferrying the students, hit the same sign posts on Saturday morning at around 5am. Mbaiwa said the bus had exceeded the carrying capacity of 62. A 14-year old student sustained head injuries and was admitted at the Selebi-Phikwe Government Hospital. "The student fell inside the trench and we suspect he was feeling dizzy and could not see where he was going. The bus was from Serowe and it was taking the students for a Botswana Scouts Association jamboree that is on-going in Selebi-Phikwe," he said.Mbaiwa said the driver informed them that he felt tired because he was coming from another trip and was only told around mid-night to go and collect the students.
