Life in an open cesspool

A Mogoditshane family lives in hell after making the 'mistake' of connecting to a main sewer pipeline almost 10 years ago.

"We connected to the main sewer in 2004, which was then under the control of the Kweneng District Council. The first spillage was in 2005 and ever since, we have never had peace in our house. Every two or three months, the main pipeline blocks, and all the effluent spills into our compound," says Patronella Modisane, an elder in the family. As she narrates the ordeal, a nearby drain continues to spill effluent into the compound, dividing it into two. The smell is putrid. She says the family is considering disconnecting from the main pipeline in preference of a septic tank. "It is a nightmare, sometimes it gets even worse and flows into our houses," she says.

In the compound live about 16 people, including tenants who have rented some of the houses. Among the family members are children as young as one-year old, and there is fear that the constant spillages could pose a serious health risk. The main problem is that the Water Utilities Corporation, which has taken over the sewer reticulation, often responds three to four days after the first report. However, this time around the family is very lucky. During the interview with the Mmegi team, the subcontractor comes to their rescue.  "The main problem is that the public throws everything into these pipes, that is why we see these blockages," says a team member of the contractor who cannot be identified as he is not authorised to speak to the media. He reveals that they have been going along the pipe unblocking it.He says the Modisanes problem is nothing compared to what they dealt with two days ago at Bontleng Market in Gaborone South.
