Lawyers coy over Nganunu

The legal fraternity has reacted with deafening silence to news that Chief Justice, Julius Nganunu, may have attempted to 'pull rank', using his influence to pressure a magistrate to release his relative from remand.

Further, it is suggested, the Chief Justice, wanted judgement against his relative altered. The controversy, which threatens to cast a dim shadow on the ability of the judiciary to act without fear or favour, broke when Mmegi reported the story in its Friday edition last week.

In an interview, the chairperson of the Law Society of Botswana, Duma Boko, could not answer questions directed to him.
