Kumakwane hosts last Desert Race

Kumakwane will host this year's Toyota Kalahari 1000 Desert Race for the last time following the organisers' decision to move the event to another venue. The race kicks off tomorrow and ends on Sunday.

Kumakwane has acted as the race headquarters for the past three years. "Plans to move the race to other areas have commenced and will be made known to the media in due course," Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) chief executive officer, Myra Sekgororoane said. She explained that in the past three years, there have been increased sales of business in the village and surrounding areas during the weekend of the annual event.

She said the trend spreads through to the retail sector including tenants of shopping malls in nearby towns, accommodation and transport sector, small general dealers, tuck shops and airtime vendors.The Village Development Committee (VDC) is said to have benefited by selling vendor outlets and parking bay tickets.The VDC has so far raised more than P145,000 in the past three years.
