Khama's friends in Zim military compromised his views

The United States Embassy was confused about President Ian Khama's views on human rights when he was Vice President and found that he was unable to condemn human rights abuses in neighbouring Zimbabwe because he had friends there, says Wikileaks cables released last week.

"As a former Botswana Defence Force commander, Khama is known to have strong sympathies with his Zimbabwean army counterparts, which may inhibit him from facing up to the wretched realities across the border."

"It may be too much to expect him to speak out about human rights abuses taking place in neighbouring Zimbabwe, especially in view of GoB's almost total silence with regard to this issue," Wikileaks says about events around 2004/05.
