President Ian Khama recently selected former Minister in Local government and Rural Development, Peter Siele to negotiate with the self-exiled Bakgatla leader, Kgafela Kgafela II over their differences.

This move follows a Khama-appointed taskforce on the Bakgatla chieftainship led by Kgosi Malope II which recommended the reinstatement of the Bakgatla leaders, Kgafela and Kgosi Bana Sekai Linchwe once all their cases have been dealt with. The report suggested that the court cases hovering over the Bakgatla leaders are the main impediments to the implementation of the taskforce recommendations.

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Slumber Tsogwane said it is true that the matter is progressing well despite a few problems. He confirmed that the President recently sent Siele to deliver his response to Kgafela’s letter. “The President chose Siele as a senior citizen to deliver his message to Kgafela. I think we better wait for the outcome from the exchanges before we distort anything,” Tsogwane said.
