Opposition parties have been advised not to take the citizen empowerment initiatives of President Ian Khama seriously.

The advice came hardly a week after some opposition parties dismissed Khama's initiatives as not being a threat to their survival and as only "aimed at giving the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) political mileage" at the next general election.

But the former Director of the Media Institute of Southern Africa's (MISA) Botswana chapter, Modise Maphanyane says the opposition should be careful not to take Khama's initiatives lightly.
