Inside Masalila's 'divorce' with BDP

The position of Executive Secretary at the Botswana Democratic Party is a hot seat on which one should sit with shock absorbers, insulators or anything to protect their behind. That's what suspended, and soon-to-be-expelled Thabo Masalila will remember every time the word Tsholetsa House is mentioned.

Sources within the party have confided in Mmegi that the 'atrocities' that Masalila has committed are unforgivable, and there is a general feeling among his opponents that he should not be forgiven. The sources allege that among the biggest mistake he committed are that he presided over the amendment of the party constitution to reduce the president's powers to give to subcommittees, making the president vulnerable to embarrassment. This is how he did it they claim: With access to the party constitution soft copy, he emended certain sections and took the copy to the Printing and Publishing Company of Botswana, for printing, with a bid to distribute the material in the near future. However, the Electoral Board, which was in a meeting last Monday, read through the papers for cross-checking and found discrepancies between the old hard copy and the soft copy.  The Gaborone Region had resolved that "The current composition, duties, powers and the five-year term of the electoral board as outlined in the Primary Elections Code of Conduct be reviewed by the National Council in a bid to refer them to the BDP National Congress for final resolution".

Somehow this was in the soft copy of the new constitution, the sources claim. Our sources allege, these amendment were made to the soft copy that was taken to the PPCB for multiplication and distribution to the membership in preparation for the National Council. The National Council was to then make recommendations to the National Congress. The Gaborone Region also resolved "That in the interests of promoting sustained growth and consolidation of inner party democracy the BDP revert fully to open contestation for all positions in internal party elections as opposed to the compromise model.""That the party's constitution, codes of conduct and relevant rules and regulations with respect to internal elections be enforced unconditionally".Our sources say other amendments to the party constitution were the reduction of the President's powers to give more powers to the Central Committee of the party, and subcommittees. Other amendments, our sources allege, were made to the Regulations adopted at the 2003 Gantsi Congress.
