Industrial Court quashes Diamonex employee claims

The Industrial Court in Gaborone has dismissed the case in which 130 employees of Diamonex Company made an urgent application seeking the court to make an order that they be paid severance benefits, notice and leave pay, and compensation for unlawful dismissal.

The employees cited Diamonex Botswana as first respondent and John Stevens, the judicial manager as the second respondent. Diamonex is listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange.

Representing the employees who came in large numbers, students from the University of Botswana Law Clinic, Gosego Lekgowe and Kabo Motswagole said that the employees have not been updated on their status since the company was put under judicial management on 23 January this year. The UB students, in their list of demands, wanted the application not to be opposed because the respondents served them with a replying affidavit only yesterday morning.
