Immigration headquarters introduce weekend shift

The Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs has said that the Department of Immigration and Citizenship headquarters in Gaborone has extended its working hours to weekends to cope with the increasing demand for its services.

Public relations officer at the ministry, Osesenaqa Lekgoko, says that the department started operating during weekends around the time the World Cup was taking place in South Africa, when many people went to immigration offices for e-passports.

Demand for service at immigration offices had increased because the public had been advised to apply for the machine-readable passports, which are much safer compared to the old ones.  In addition, the South African immigration department had indicated that they would not be taking emergency travel documents.
