IEC seeks to cancel by-elections

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Majority of residents of Botshabelo North have strongly opposed the suggestion by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) that there should be no by-elections after the death of councillor Michel Tidimane early this month.

The IEC is consulting with wards that are supposed to hold by-elections to forgo them because the October general elections are just around the corner.

IEC secretary Gabriel Seeletso said given the short time left ahead of general elections, there is concern that newly elected councillors and MPs may not attend even a single council or parliamentary session.
