I had to resign - Chiepe

Although legal experts say there is a constitutional ambiguity on whether a sitting specially elected Member of Parliament (MP) should resign their position if they want to contest a by-election there is at least a precedent.

Former MP and long time cabinet minister Dr Gaositwe Chiepe has told Mmegi that she had to face the same situation in the late 70s.

Chiepe said she had joined Parliament as a Specially Elected MP after the 1974 general election. During the life of the Parliament, Bakwena Kgari, who was then the MP for Serowe South, died.
