Gaborone Mayor, Harry Mothei has refuted claims that he intends to defect to the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). Mothei is a nominated councillor. He stood for the BNF in previous elections.Mothei has been linked to the BDP after his right hand man, Leornard Matsheka defected to the ruling party early this month.

Matsheka is the councillor for Morula Ward in Gaborone West.  Another BNF activist, Joper Osupile who was also associated with Mothei, has also defected to the BDP.
When he joined the BDP, Osupile claimed that some BNF councillors were going to follow him. Osupile successfully represented Mothei in a disciplinary case in which the nominated councillor was charged with defying the party caucus by contesting for the Gaborone mayoral elections. But speaking in an interview, Mothei said he has no intention whatsoever to leave the BNF.

"I am a life member of the BNF," he said, adding that BNF would always be his political home.
Mothei said he has never belonged to any political party other than the BNF.  He said he joined the BNF in the 1970s.  He recalled that he was attracted to the BNF by the late Dr Kenneth Koma's philosophies.
Mothei said though Matsheka was his friend that does not mean that he would join him at the BDP.
