Husband disowns wife and children

FRANCISTOWN: An elderly woman has expressed concern that the man she married according to customary law has taken a U-turn and now claims that they were never married.

Thompson Sebele, 54 and Violet Matenge, 61 appeared before court to appeal the ruling taken at the initial hearing at Makaleng Customary court. Sebele claimed the proceedings were biased as the judge refused to listen to his explanation and eventually fined him eight heads of cattle.

Sebele told court that he knew Matenge because she used to work as a maid at his home in Letlhakane. Matenge insisted that Sebele has to pay for wasting her time, asserting that she could not leave the partnership empty-handed. Sebele said that what Matenge told the court at Makaleng was untrue.
