Human computer comes to Gaborone

She holds an undisputed place in the Guinness Book of Records for multiplying two randomly chosen 13 digit numbers and giving the correct answer in 28 seconds. She performed the feat in 1980. That is why Shakuntala Devi is dubbed the human computer.

She has beaten a sophisticated computer - a Univac 1108, which gave the 23rd root of a 201 digit number. She made her mental calculations in 50 seconds beating the computer by 12 seconds.

 
That was in 1977. This week she will be demonstrating her intelligence in Botswana. She is in the country on a visit to raise funds for a mathematical school in Bangalore, India. Mathematics would be taught in the school as a special subject. When questioned about the source of her talent, she smiles and states that: "It is a god given talent that I have enjoyed since I was three years. I do it to inspire youngsters to take interest in mathematics, which is a subject that they hate most". She can a calculate any figure without the use of calculator.
