High STI rates worry council chairman

MOGODITSHANE: Up to 885 cases of Sexual Transmitted Infections (STI) have been reported in the Mogditshane/Thamaga Sub-District, a councillor has said.

Driver Motlokwa, chairman of Mogoditshane/Thamaga Sub-Council said yesterday that the relevant departments should continue to educate the public about the correct and consistent use of both male and female condoms to prevent such infections, pregnancies and diseases.He told the Sub-Council meeting that there is a need to scale up safe male circumcision and to ensure condom availability in the community and at the workplace. He said the high rate of STI prevalence in the area is a challenge.

He said that with the support of National AIDS Coordinating Agency (NACA) under Botswana AIDS Prevention Project (BANPS), P2,238,716 has been allocated in 2013 to help curb the spread of  STIs, HIV/AIDS.He said that the Botswana National Youth Development Trust was given the largest share of P653,150.The Evangelical Fellowship of Botswana got P443,500, Batlang Jehova was allocated P52,500 while Tse Digkolo got P493,00 and Home Health Education Services got P596,609.Motlokwa hopes that these interventions will go a long way in preventing the spread of HIV and other STIs. He said that the groups that got the money will be addressing thematic areas of abstinence, correct condom use and multi- concurrent sexual partners.
