Scores of Batswana gathered at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKIA) on yesterday to welcome back their Queen, Miss World Africa, Lesego Chombo.

Hundreds of her well-wishers thronged the airport, quadruple the number of people who attended her send off a month ago.

Clad in their blue, black, and white regalia, they chanted songs like, ‘lesego la rona’ as soon as the airport staff announced Chombo’s flight had touched down.

“We are here to welcome back ngwana wa rona, Lesego la rona,” one of the spectators said. Clad in her fashionable leteisi inspired attire, the airport gates finally opened and SSKIA went up in song. It was a stampede outside the airport forcing the police to whisk her away from the crowd that wanted every piece of Chombo. Chombo thanked Batswana for their support.

“The world knows there is Botswana. Our voice was heard. Other contestants would always tell me that in the comment section all they see is the Botswana Flag. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for having my back.” From the airport, the Miss Botswana organisers had organised a motorcade that cut across the city. Indeed those who could not make it to the airport waited for the beauty queen along the route that had been shared. Ululations and screams were the order of the day as the motorcade went around the city until at the Three Chief’s Monument. Her parents, who were also spotted at the welcome ceremony, often shed tears as the crowd sang, “Chombo, Chombo Chombo.”

On behalf of Government, standing in for the Minister of Youth, Sport, Gender and Culture, Tumiso Rakgare was Minister Annah Mokgethi who shared government's support for Chombo. “She has truly represented our nation with grace, intelligence and beauty showcasing the best of what Botswana has to offer.

Her journey was not an easy one but she showed resilience and determination . We would like to commend her for the hard work and dedication, “ said the Minister. Although she fell just short of winning the coveted title of Miss World, Chombo's journey to the Top 4 captured the hearts of many and has made her a symbol of pride for her home country. Chombo, a stunning beauty with a heart of gold, had initially been a dark horse in the competition and was crowned Miss World Africa. However Batswana social media comments calling out the pageant organisers also caught the attention of many, forcing Chombo to issue a statement. Chombo wowed the judges and the audience alike with her character and eloquence. Her Miss World journey was reminiscent of the night she was crowned Miss Botswana.

Chombo remains a cut above the rest. Speaking of Miss Botswana, Chombo is expected to crown her successor this coming Saturday at the Royal Aria Stadium, in Tlokweng. Tickets are on sale for P500.

Morwaeng’s rants: Leaders must listen

Kabo Morwaeng, a senior BDP figure known for always defending the President and also sent to do some shocking stuff in his capacity as a Minister, has defended the former Cabinet against claims it failed to advise ex-president Mokgweetsi Masisi, contributing to the party’s defeat. While he insists Cabinet discussions are “secret” and that the President holds “enormous power,” his defence misses a crucial point: Batswana deserve leaders...
