President Ian Khama has said that security and stability of a country plays a pivotal role in the peace of every country and its ability to attract foreign direct investment for economic growth.

He said during the State of the Nation Address that the law enforcement agencies should be well resourced to deal effectively with all types of crime and the people must have a full appreciation of their role in making Botswana safe and secure.

"While crime in general has declined over time, intrusive and violent crime remains a major concern.  In the face of this increasing type of criminal activity, we will come up with strategies that will be responsive to this crime trend. To this end we will increase police visibility," he said. Some of the immediate plans are establishment of neighbourhood watch strategies that will employ a number of youth to create more employment. Khama expressed confidence that these measures, can enhance and ensure the confidence of communities in law enforcement agencies.  "It is my expectation that by January 2010 we will see crime on a downward trend," he said. He acknowledged that instances of individual transgressions and errors can occur in any organisation and whenever credible allegations of serious abuse by security personnel arise, they will be impartially investigated in accordance with the law and demands of due process. He said this will not be subject to the arbitrary timetables set by sensational newspaper headlines or partisan adventurers.
