Govt tackles registration of births and deaths

The Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs continues with efforts to deal with the challenges of delayed, as well as lack of, registration of births and deaths.

Minister Edwin Batshu yesterday said that he intends to "extensively" roll out the ministry's birth registration campaign to rural areas, as research has shown that rural areas have recorded the least registration rate.

He was speaking at the official launch of the on-site registration birth service centres at Bokamoso Private Hospital (BPH). Batshu said a 2009 study by the Botswana Family Welfare, carried out by Statistics Botswana, revealed that city and town registration stood at 85.2 percent, with urban villages at 73.7 percent, while rural areas recorded a 66.9 percent registration rate.
