Govt Spares Tsolamosese Squatter

Alec Olobeng, who hails from the North East, and his Zimbabwean wife in Tsolamosese are the recipients of government's compassion.

First, the couple was spared from eviction after it was discovered they were squatters and a lenient Mogoditshane land board instead fined Olobeng P10,000 for allocating himself a piece of land illegally.Later, the fine was waived when the social welfare department convinced the Land Board to write off Olobeng's fines on account of his status as a needy person. The result paved the way for Olobeng's plot to be registered and awarded a certificate of ownership.

On Saturday Olobeng's yard had the look of dignity, as he celebrated a beautiful three bedroomed house that was built for him by the local Catholic Parish under Father George. It was the church's contribution towards the President's Housing Appeal. Even a government department, the Department of Curriculum Development, gave a helping hand by installing water and the sewerage system in the yard.
