Govt Solar Panels Not Functioning Nationwide

Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources Ponatshego Kedikilwe, says that a detailed assessment of the condition of solar panels across Botswana is under way.

He was responding to Shoshong Member of Parliament (MP) Philip Makgalemele who wanted to know if he (Minister Kedikilwe) was aware that solar panels in most parts of government establishments across the country, especially in the Shoshong constituency, were dysfunctional.  He also wanted to know if Kedikilwe would consider undertaking a detailed assessment of this situation before society loses confidence in solar energy.

Kedikilwe said that so far the assessment has already covered Botswana Defence Force (BDF)Barracks (Mogoditshane and Glen Valley), and the University of Botswana (UB).  He said that the assessment would be extended to other parts of the country and shall be completed by April 2012.   He said that it was anticipated that at the end of the assessment some mitigation measures such as capacity building through training and rehabilitation of the systems would be undertaken.
