Government manufactures poverty - UB don

A University of Botswana (UB) sociologist, Dr Onalenna Selolwane, has lambasted the government for promoting a dependency syndrome by giving people handouts.

Speaking at a roundtable discussion sponsored by the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) in Gaborone yesterday Selolwane said in Botswana the government "deliberately manufactures poverty".

"Bo a lengwa be bo godisiwa.  The poor people are given handouts and they become so grateful such that they will not question why they are being given handouts when they could be providing for themselves," she said.
