Fraud suspects lose their freedom

Two suspects in a land fraud case have lost their freedom after the prosecutor successfully applied that they be remanded in custody because they have a tendency of failing to appear in court.

The prosecutor, Onalethata Kambai told Village chief magistrate, Lot Moroka to stamp his authority arguing that the court has been treating the suspects with 'kid-gloves' despite the fact that they had committed a serious offence. He appreciated the fact that the court had been lenient with one of the suspects, Peter Motsemme, a 70-year-old man from Old Naledi because of his advanced age but he had to be remanded for a speedy disposal of the case. Kambai told Moroka that the other suspect, 48-year-old Jonas Paledi has a tendency of not turning up in court, only to appear later and claim ignorance of the date when he is supposed to attend proceedings.

Kambai said that the suspects' behaviour showed that they were not aware of the seriousness of the charges they were facing and their attitude to the whole case was enough testimony. "I submit your worship that they are making a mockery of our criminal justice system," he asserted.
