Fraud allegations in GCC elections

Gaborone mayor Haskins Nkaigwa and his deputy Florence Shagwa were re-elected yesterday amid controversy after a Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) councillor for Itumeleng ward, Dlamini Kwapa, was accused of tampering with ballot papers.

When the ballot papers were counted in the mayoral elections, it was realised that there were 36 ballot papers, despite the fact that there were 35 before they were handed to councillors for voting. The opposition collective had 19 votes against the BDP's 17 votes.

 When Gaborone City Clerk Agnes Seragi, who was the presiding officer, revealed that there was an extra ballot paper, councillor Tshepo Moloko said that Kwapa had added it, throwing the council into a heated verbal exchange between BDP and opposition councillors.
