Former police inspector challenges defilement conviction

Court of Appeal judges will today deliver judgement in a case where a former police inspector is seeking leave to challenge his 2008 conviction and sentence for defilement.

Othusitse Marape (47) is seeking leave after the High Court dismissed his application to move to the Court of Appeal. Previous attempts by the former inspector to challenge the 10-year jail sentence at the Court of Appeal were dismissed by the High Court. The sentence was handed down by a magistrate in 2008.

The High Court first dismissed his appeal against the conviction in February 2010. He applied to the High Court to let him take his appeal to the Court of Appeal, but this too was dismissed by the High Court in September 2010.
