Form 4 students likely to miss school term

Form four students are likely to miss a school term this year due to the lack of organisation by the stakeholders concerned.

Form Three students normally receive their results before Christmas to allow them time to prepare for the next level. However thousands of students who last year sat their Junior Certificate Examination are still anxiously awaiting their results.

The delay is said to be due to a 'miscommunication' between the Ministry of Education and the teachers, on the procedure for submitting coursework marks, which together with the examination results make up the final mark for the students. As it stands teachers have failed to meet the January 14, 2011 deadline that had been agreen upon. As we approach February it is becoming increasingly doubtful if students will make it to class before the term ends on March 18. Once availed, the coursework marks have to go through a moderation process before they are submitted to BEC for aggregation, after which they can be released. "The whole process cannot just take a week or two. Maybe the powers that be underestimated the issue. We don't want to point fingers at this point but we hope that our colleagues have learnt a lesson that we need each other for the examinations to be a success," Botswana Secondary Teachers Union (BOSETU) publicist secretary Mogomotsi Motshegwe said.
