FNB explains delays in students' allowances

The government has blamed a commercial bank for the inordinate delay in paying allowances for students attending local colleges.

"The finance department had to be told that the students have been sponsored and registered with a confirmation from their respective institutions. The names were then submitted to the bank where the accounts were opened in South Africa," Kgotla said.

He stated that by yesterday most allowances had been paid save for students who had not supplied all information to the bank. "Some names were brought without identity numbers and such files had to be held to supply such details," he said.
