FCC mulls over weak pass rate

FRANCISTOWN: Francistown City Council (FCC) district officer Boyce Mangole says the performance of schools in the city is below the set standard for both quality and quantity pass rates.

He said this as part of a presentation by the Urban Development Committee at the just ended full council meeting on Friday.  Mangole said the quality pass of A and B grades in standard four test results for 2012 is 28.3 percent with the quantity pass of A, B and C grades pegged at 62.9 percent. He said schools have to do a lot to assist learners, as they might not do well in upper classes. He said school management teams have been seriously cautioned to support teachers and learners.

Ikhutseng Primary School scooped position one with 66 students passing with A and B grades, which is 59.9 percent. Tatitown Primary School followed with 22.8 percent (13 A and B grades). A total 43 students scored A, B and C grades (75.4 percent). He said the majority of students performed badly in subjects taught in English. The language seems to be a learning barrier. "Learners perform better in Setswana, which is their mother tongue, and it is time English is used as a medium of instruction at all levels," said Mangole. He said last year's Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) results showed a 77.5 percent pass rate.
