Farmers cry after EU beef export suspension

FRANCISTOWN: North East District (NED) farmers are crying foul after government suspended movement of cattle in certain veterinary disease control zones and halted exports to the lucrative European Union market.

The suspension by the Ministry of Agriculture covers zone 4A in the Boteti Sub-District and parts of the Central and North East Districts.

A cattle farmer from the North East, Richard Monthe of Mosojane said they should brace for a tough year because they will not generate money for the sustenance of their families due to the suspension. "The ministry has dropped a bomb. How are we going to survive if we will not be selling our beef to the EU? As a farmer, I generate income for my family by selling cattle but if we have been suspended from selling. Life is going to be hell for us," he said. He added that their problems are compounded by the fact that they are faced with restrictions from selling to butcheries.
