Family planning is an investment, not a cost - expert

KAMPALA: African governments need to consider family planning as an investment and not as a cost, an expert here has said.

 Investing in family planning has been found to be one of the most cost effective and high impact interventions for a country's socio-economic development and transformation, Dr Wilfred Ochan, Assistant Representative for United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)-Uganda said recently. He was speaking on the first of a three day media advocacy workshop on the Campaign on Acceleration Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA).

Annually, over 287,000 women die globally from pregnancy and delivery-related complications, and more than half of these (165,000) are in Africa. According to UNFPA, 452 women in Africa die every day from pregnancy-related causes. In Botswana, statistics from 2011 show that 188 women die annually out of every 100,000 that give birth.
