Extent of mental illness burden unknown

Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital Superintendent, Dr. Mpho Thula, says the burden of Botswana's mental illness is still unknown due to lack of accurate statistics.

Thula says it is currently difficult to know the extent of mental health problems because some patients do not visit hospitals but prefer traditional doctors and spiritual healers while others just stay at home.  Further, the Ministry of Health has not undertaken any study to establish the extent of the problem. 

However, Thula says police records indicate that mental illnesses could be on the rise, as are suicide cases.
