An 11-year-old girl is among the 680 teenage mothers who gave birth in Ngamiland in the last two years.

A recent report from Maun Letshobathebe II Memorial Hospital (LIIMH) indicates that teenage pregnancy is a serious problem in the district as exemplified by the fact that all the 680 mothers are not more than 16-years-old. LIIMH superintendent Dr Maxwell Mungisi has said that the 680 teenagers delivered babies through the hospital's maternity wing.  Among these young mothers were two girls aged 12 and 13, followed by 10 girls aged 14 and 62 girls who were 15 years old. Mungisi said that the total record that he was presenting was not summing up all teenage pregnancies taking place in the district.

He said this is because some cases never passed through the hands of medical experts as home deliveries was still a norm amongst most Ngamiland communities.
