In the midst of an ongoing court battle between the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), the commission has increased candidate deposit fees by 100%.

“Candidates nomination deposit has changed from P500 to P1,000 for National Assembly while nomination for Member of Council has changed from P100 to P200,” the IEC wrote in a notice on their social media pages.

According to the IEC, the fees will be first paid by all those who wish to contest for the Lepokole-Borotsi Polling District by-election who will submit their names for nomination on November 17, 2023, at Borotsi Primary School in Bobonong.

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kgotla Autlwetse issued a writ of election for Lepokole-Borotsi ward by-election setting it for December 9.

The by-election follows the resignation of Motseothata Mafoko from active politics in May 2023. He was elected under the Umbrella for Democratic Change ticket.

The deposit shall be returned to the candidate or their personal representative if: The candidate dies before the date of the election; there is no contested election; a contested election is declared void; he/she withdraws his candidature in due time; in any contested election he/she is successful or obtains not less than one – 20th of the total number of votes cast in his constituency; and/or if his/her nomination is invalid for any other reason.
