Drink given to school children declared unsafe

FUNA, an orange drink which has been consumed by both primary and secondary school students in the country for many years, has been declared unsafe following a circular sent out by the Ministry of Local Government to primary schools.

In some districts, the circular has been passed on to junior secondary schools as well. Despite this, in some areas of the country, junior secondary schools are still including the drink in their school menu.

 
Among its ingredients, the drink contains the controversial sweetener sodium cyclamate, which was banned in both the United States and the United Kingdom since the 1970s following two studies which showed that it caused bladder cancer in rats and testicular atrophy in mice.
