Drastic changes expected at BTU meet

FRANCISTOWN: In a bid to modernise its operations and bring them up to par with other trade union organisations around the country, the Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) will undergo extensive structural changes, the organisation's publicity secretary, Tidimalo Modise Maeletso, has revealed.

This will begin at its next elective congress that is billed for Adansonia Hotel from April 17 to 20."After benchmarking with other trade unions around the country and in neighbouring countries, we saw it fit to overhaul the union structure," Maeletso said in an interview with Mmegi yesterday. The 16 regional representatives who used to be part of the National Core Executive will now form the governing council. Other members of the core executive are on the National Executive Committee.

Maeletso said both structures will now function independently following the union's decision to dissolve the core executive. New posts within the NEC, among them that of National Organising Secretary, will be created. "the national Organising Secretary will be a full time post," Maeletso said. "We want someone who will coordinate union activities around the country."
