Members of Ntlo ya Dikgosi are against the idea of sending school children home when their parents fail to pay fees.

The members expressed their misgivings during a Ntlo ya Dikgosi session on Friday. Some of the chiefs felt that sending a child to stay home for a month because his or her parents no money is have not right. They said this punished the child and not the parent who is at fault. Some chiefs wondered why the school authorities do not write letters to parents at the end of the term to remind them to pay school fees.

Kgosi Puso Gaborone of Batlokwa, a former teacher, wondered whether sending children to their homes does not defeat the purpose of educating the nation. Kgosi Kea Lempadi of Shakawe said there are destitutes in his area who are not registered due to shortage of social welfare officers. As a result, the children of the destitute might be sent away from school because their parents have failed to pay school fees.
