Deputy Mayor Faces Game Meat Charges

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Deputy mayor, Letsweletse Dinale has been released on bail pending the hearing and determination of a case in which he is charged with unlawful possession of game meat.

He is scheduled to appear for mention at the Palapye Magistrate Court on October 23. The Ikageleng Phase 1 councillor and an unidentified companion were arrested and remanded in custody on June 28 after they were allegedly found with game meat by Martin's Drift police officers. Martin's Drift police commander, Boikhutso Dintwa said the meat was found in the councillor's car. The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) councillor is out on bail after he appeared in court on June 29.

A senior BDP official in Selebi-Phikwe, Tebogo Venson said he is aware of the allegations against the deputy mayor, though the party leadership has not been informed. He added that normally they report such issues to the party headquarters to conduct investigations and give the region a report. "But in the constituency, we must call him and get the story from the horse's mouth and I believe we have to do something," Venson said. He asserted that as deputy mayor Dinale should report to the matter to party because by virtue of his position he is responsible for all the BDP councillors in Selebi-Phikwe Town Council.
